A CITY fish and chip shop has made it through to the final stages of a national competition.

Kingfisher Fish and Chips in Plympton has been named among the top chippies in Devon, Cornwall and Somerset as part of the 2016 National Fish and Chip Awards.

The eatery will now go up against others in the region in the race to become the best takeaway in the South and West England category.

Owner Craig Maw said: "We are absolutely over the moon to have made it this far in the competition. We've only just received the news, but we're grateful to all our customers and staff who have supported the business.

"To be recognised as one of the top 20 fish and chips in the country is a great achievement. There are more than 10,500 other takeaways that we have to compete with, so to make it this far is fantastic.

"Last year we only made it to the top 60 stage, which we were both happy and disappointed with at the time. It's always nice to get through, but you want to go as far as you can."

Craig's chippie, which was recently confirmed as the world's most sustainable, will now undergo a rigorous examination by a mystery auditor who may visit the Plympton-based restaurant at any given time.

"It has certainly got my heart racing, that's for sure," he added. "But this is a good position to be in. This wasn't gifted to us; we've had to work to get here."

Kingfisher Fish and Chips will now battle it out against Harbour Lights, a takeaway based in Falmouth.

Paul Williams, chief executive of Seafish, said: "The aim of the National Fish and Chip Awards has always been to showcase the very best fish and chip businesses and individuals in the UK while setting incredibly high standards for the industry to aspire to.

"The independent takeaway fish and chip shop of the year award is one of the highest honours to receive as a fish and chip business.

Many of our past winners and finalists have gone on to reap substantial benefits, including international fame through industry trips overseas, increased shop footfall and turnover and even launching their own products.

"It's great to see so many excellent shops through to this stage of the competition. I'd like to offer up my congratulations and wish them the best as they prepare to continue their quest towards winning a regional title, but also thank them for consistently helping us to reinforce the UK's reputation as the home of the world's best fish and chips."

The awards will be handed out at the Lancaster London Hotel on January 20 next year.
