A MASSIVE new two-storey Poundland is set to open up in Plymouth. The discount chain looks set to unveil an enourmous 7,693 sq ft store on a city retail park. The new superstore, just off Exeter Street, is the latest move in the battle to dominate Plymouth's pound shop market. Rival Poundworld today opened up its first Plymouth shop just metres away from Poundland's city centre store. Bargain-hungry shoppers queued for more than an hour to get their hands on the cut-price goods on offer at the new shop, next to the sundial. But now Poundworld has hit back, with plans reminiscent of the BBC One TV Pound Shop Wars. The Herald can reveal how it is taking over a warehouse-sized unit on the Friary Retail Park. The retail park already boasts a rival Poundstretcher, along with Pets at Home, home furnishing store Dunelm, toy shop Smyths and arts and crafts supplier Hobycraft. After a recent extension, a new Costa coffee shop opened in part of the newly-built space earlier this year. Now Poundland has been given the go-ahead from Plymouth City Council planning chiefs to put up its branding, signalling its move into the remaining part of the building. The unit had been earmarked for a 99p Stores, but Poundland took over that rival chain earlier this year. The discount store's floor plans show how there will be at least half a dozen tills, a cash machine, a staircase, lift and a mezzanine floor, bringing the total retail space up to around 5,000 sq ft. Poundland, based in the West Midlands, was founded in 1990 and claims to be the first 'price-point' retailer in Europe. Last year it made just under £14million on revenues of £998million – and employs more than 10,000 people.
