THE launch of Plymouth's newest Tesco store has been delayed - but it is expected to throw open its doors within days.

The first customers were expected through the doors at the new store in Mutley today.

But workmen are applying the finishing touches at the new Tesco Express, in Alexandra Road.

The shelves are still empty but the building has taken shape and is expected to throw open its doors imminently.

The store - less than half a mile from an existing branch - got the go-ahead a year ago.

Work has been under way on the store for several months and hoardings which were around the plot have recently been removed.

The new store is at the former Texaco garage or Vale Service Station, as it is sometimes known.

Contrary to previous plans, the new store on Alexandra Road will not double up as a petrol station.

The Texaco closed several months ago and the former petrol station has been empty ever since.

Two new student flats blocks are now nearby, including one on the site of the recently-demolished St Augustine's Church.

The new store will include an all-night cash machine and advertising hoardings.

When built the new Tesco Express will have 13 car parking spaces, including one disabled space and four cycle spaces.

A Tesco spokesperson said previously: "We think that Alexandra Road would make a great location for an Express store and would prove really popular with customers.

"We're looking forward to the opportunity to serve the community and creating jobs for local people.

"We have written to the local community about our plans."
