JOSI Francis was being pestered for attention by family dog Figi while trying to think of a name for her new business.

That's how it came to be called after an attention-seeking Cairn terrier.

Figi's Boutique is celebrating a successful first year at Plymouth City Market, selling hand-made jewellery and fashion accessories.

Josi, aged 22, a trained hairdresser, said: "I wanted to do something creative, so started making jewellery at home and taking it to craft fairs.

"I make 40 per cent of my stock myself, including custom-made bracelets with names etc."

Josi's partner Paul McLaren, a self-employed electrician, assisted with funding, DIY at her stall and creating a business plan.

Two friends staff the stall as unpaid volunteers – repaid in babysitting services.

Josi, from Coxside, said she enjoyed working in the market.

"It's a lot easier than a shop because it's easy in/easy out, and because mine is a single unit I get business rate relief," she said. "Other stall-holders are friendly and jewellery stalls in the market are different, it's healthy competition.

"If the business carries on as well as it has been, I'd like to move up from a stall, but I'm taking it step by step."
