Art collective reveals Devon as muse

FROM the romance of rugged coastlines and sparkling beaches to mysterious moorland and lush wildflower gardens and woodland streams, our region has inspired artists for centuries.

Reynolds, Coleridge, Ayers and Hepworth among many others, have all been inspired by the light quality and open spaces in Devon and Cornwall.

A new exhibition sponsored by the Moorland Garden Hotel is taking place in Tavistock Town Hall on August 4 to August 9. The collection by artist collective, Drawn from the Valley, reveals how our beautiful landscape continues to play muse to the creative heart.

Drawn to the Valley was created by artists in 2003 as a support network, and to promote the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural beauty, along the way contributing to local economy growth through exhibitions and open studios.

Clare Law is an impressionist who works with oils and one of the 160 member artists in the group.

Having moved from London five years ago, she says there is no comparison to working in the area – it's inspiring and beautiful.

"I love the environment I'm in. Down here I can take the time to see tonal qualities, the light and shadow – around every corner is a painting waiting to happen."

Painting is largely solitary work so touching base with like -minded souls has proved invaluable for Clare, who originally hails from Bodmin.

"I had no idea that there was the Drawn to the Valley community. It was a turning point for me.

"To meet like-minded people and talk art all the time was great."

Clare's oil on canvas will be on sale at Tavistock Town Hall from August 4 to 9 alongside works by local painters, print makers, ceramicists, sculptors, calligraphers, jewellers and textile artists.
