Wrigley is backing a key award at The Herald's City and Waterfront Awards and Alex West, senior manager for corporate affairs believes sponsoring the Best Local Produce or Sustainability Champion is a perfect fit for the global brand.
"Sustainability is a topic very close to our heart," said Ms West.
Wrigley has been part of the Plymouth business landscape for over forty years and getting involved in a celebration of the business community was an easy decision for the team.
"Generally it's because we are a proud member of the business community and always look for opportunities to get involved and recognise the fantastic work which is being done in Plymouth."
Wrigley's team is proud of their part in business development and sustainability in the city, but also the key role it plays in the wider community.
Ms West said: "We moved to Plymouth in 1970 and Plymouth as seen a lot of change since that time.
"I love getting a taxi from the station to Wrigley's site – people have always got great stories to tell about their local associations with the company so it feels like it really is at the heart of the Plymouth Community."
The Plymouth site is the only UK manufacturing site for Wrigley. 65 per cent of products produced remain in the UK while 35 per cent goes to overseas markets, the company also employs more than 300 local people.
"Our Plymouth factory plays an important part in the global team – several of our world famous brands are manufactured in Plymouth for the UK marketplace."
They are a global operator with an eye on the future and Ms West believes the award represents the hard work local business put into creating sustainable futures.
"It's a topic very close to our heart.
"We are constantly striving to improve all aspects of our environmental performance at the Plymouth site and making changes in things like energy and water use, waste generation, recycling, greenhouse gas emissions.
"We have a real focus on bio diversity."
Wrigley's sits in a semi-rural location on 45 acres, 28 of which are natural habitat.
70 fallow deer reside on the site and Wrigley now boasts five beehives, a badger set and pond thriving with wildlife.
"We make sure we are using the land in a way that supports the wider environment."
Wrigley's were the first food and drink manufacturer to be nominated a national Wildlife Trust bio diversity benchmark award in recognition of the effort they put in to the wildlife of the site.
The team are looking forward to the awards night on October 22, which will give them a chance to celebrate the success of the Plymouth business community and invite special guests.
"We are inviting guests from our charity – Country Holidays for Inner City Kids who we have been working with since 2005, so the awards are a great opportunity to say thank you to them too."
