A Plymouth fish and chip shop has been named as one of the top three in the country and will now go head to head with two others in a bid to scoop a national prize.
Harbourside Fish and Chips has been named as one of the top three UK fish and chip shops leading the way in marketing innovation as part of the 2016 National Fish & Chip Awards, organised by Seafish.
Harbourside Fish and Chips will now go head to head against fellow fish and chip contenders – Burton Road Chippy in Lincoln, Lincolnshire and Simpsons Fish & Chips in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire – in the race to bag the prestigious Marketing Innovation Award.
To get to this stage and secure a place in the coveted shortlist, shops have been appraised across a variety of judging criteria including how businesses research and segment their respective target audiences, how marketing budget is planned, actioned and managed, evidence of actual activity, what processes are in place to measure any success and importantly, evidence of the impacts that marketing activity has had on respective businesses over the past year.
Dedicated to inform their customers that fish and chips is the healthiest takeaway, Harbourside launched a healthy eating campaign to combat myths that takeaways are unhealthy. By changing their cooking methods, using a thicker chip and having their portions nutritionally analysed to give customers an accurate calorific value to the takeaway, Harbourside has successfully helped educate their customers on the health benefits.
Displaying specific icons to indicate the 'healthier options' as well as designing their own 'healthier' eating comparison posters and flyers, Harbourside healthy eating options increased from 11-20%. Introducing mascot 'Finley the Fish' to encourage local children to eat more fish and chips is a great touch, targeting their full spectrum of customers to result in an overall turnover increase of 30% from last year.
Over the coming weeks, the shortlisted businesses will be subjected to mystery judging visits from an awards auditor who will be reviewing marketing innovation practices. This final stage of competition judging will determine the winner that will be announced at the awards ceremony to be held in London in January 2016.
